Two Villages in One, Roof-Wise

East of the river and around the original village core you have genuinely old stock: steeper pitches, some cut-up roofs with dormers and multiple valleys, occasional cedar underneath, and framing that was never designed around a modern ventilation strategy. Those roofs need somebody who will look in the attic before quoting, because the surprises there are structural rather than cosmetic.

West, along and beyond the Randall Road corridor, it is a different job entirely: 1990s and 2000s subdivisions, simple gable and hip roofs, uniform builder shingle, all reaching the same stage of life at the same time. Straightforward one-day tear-offs, and the main variable is what the decking looks like once it is open.

The August 2025 Storms Came Through Here

North Aurora took trees and power lines down in the August 2025 event, with minor damage reported to houses and vehicles. Neighbouring Oswego had roofs damaged on Southbury Boulevard and Lakeshore Drive in the same system, and the wider Aurora area has now logged something like 27 confirmed severe weather events since June 2024.

Tree limbs coming down is the one people notice. What they miss is the abrasion damage: a branch scraping a slope for an hour in high wind strips granules in a stripe, and that stripe ages five times faster than the roof around it. If you had a limb come off, get somebody to look at what it touched on the way down.

Ice Dams Along the Older Streets

North Aurora produces more ice dam calls per house than anywhere else we work, and the reason is the older housing stock: shallow attics, minimal or compressed insulation, and eaves that were built long before anybody thought about intake ventilation. Add the Fox River corridor's habit of holding damp cold air and you get textbook conditions.

Steam removal is what we use, because chipping breaks brittle shingles and rock salt destroys flashing and gutters. But steam is treatment. The fix is air-sealing the ceiling and balancing the attic, which is covered on the ventilation page. A new roof alone will not stop a dam forming, though correctly run ice and water shield will stop it doing damage. Both those sentences are true and contractors tend to tell you only one of them.
